in the half-night, moving according to my heart,
suddenly a wounded deer stepped out of the dark

so I changed my pace, became silent
bound and determined to follow her wherever she went
and I remembered a story that I heard
about a cedar tree that joined heaven and earth

and down came men, and down came women
and the spirits of deer came down following them
on the outside I was calm, my face was still – but inside
the memory was beautiful and tears started to spill

In the night I follow a different set of signs
I command a different set of signals, in the night
like the language of surgery - like the language of hunting -
invisible and varying

I followed her everywhere in her search
I followed her to the garden of a church
